Despite studies highlighting edible packaging (EP) as a sustainable food preservation method that supports healthier food and eco-friendly materials, research on consumer attitudes remains limited. This work aimed to conduct a cross-sectional online survey to assess knowledge, perceptions, and the contribution of materials to the EP concept in Romania. Specific factors were evaluated (e.g., knowledge level, perceived benefits of EP, perceived advantages of nanoparticles, transparency importance, and willingness to consume opaque EP), followed by their association with visual acceptability and consumption intention of an EP prototype, willingness to pay more for EP, and socio-demographic profile. We evaluated visual acceptability and consumption intention toward images of EP made from pectin/rosemary oil-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles, with or without food contact with ready-to-eat chicken breast. The study included 254 Romanian respondents, predominantly women (76.4%), especially young adults (60.2%), with high education (70.1%), from urban areas (76%), especially the Transylvania area (49.6%). Knowledge was not significantly associated with consumption intention, visual acceptability, and willingness to pay more for EP. EP materials for buying a food product are relevant for 59 % of respondents. Overall, EP acceptance was driven more by personal perception than by rational knowledge and benefits.
