This study aims to compare the development of the Syrian political and social structures in the period between independence and unity with Egypt (1946–1958). It concludes that the political structure experienced an accelerated change because of regional and international developments while the social structure only witnessed a small change. This asymmetry discredited the conservative politicians and gave the military a justification to interfere in Syrian political life more than could have been anticipated.
