Background : The impact of oral and dental pathology on an animal's general health and quality of life is becoming increasingly recognised in companion animals, both by vet professionals and owners alike. Therefore, it is important that veterinary professionals have the knowledge and skills to identify early signs of dental disease in first‐opinion practice so that they can ensure appropriate management and treatment options are made readily available for these patients. Aim of the article : This article highlights the importance of a thorough oral examination to allow clinicians to identify subtle signs of oral and dental pathology. It should increase general practitioners' confidence with identifying early stages of disease, so that they can offer appropriate advice and treatment options for their patients at the earliest opportunity. This should improve owner awareness of how to maintain good oral health in their pets, which has a positive impact on our patients' health and welfare.
