This qualitative study explored women’s gym experiences across the life-course using a life history approach and life map visualisation. Nine women aged 35–67 years participated in semi-structured interviews reflecting on gym-related experiences and the role of fitness professionals. Thematic narrative analysis revealed three themes: (1) When community, fun, and embracing newness are lacking; (2) The search for safe spaces; and (3) Finding meaningful physical activity against all odds. Early experiences were shaped by weight stigma, toxic health messaging, and poor instructor support, often leading to shame, injury, or disengagement. While some women found joy in physical activity, it typically took years of trial and error. Our findings highlight the non-linear trajectories and the elements that drive women towards (or away from) enjoyable and meaningful physical activity, with a focus on the importance of the client-trainer relationship, providing actionable changes in gym culture.
