Introduction: Saindhava Lavana (rock salt) is unique in Ayurveda, serving as a daily wholesome substance and a therapeutic agent in classical toxicology (Visha Chikitsa). This review explores its dual therapeutic and toxicological profile, formulation roles, and dosage paradoxes.Materials and methods: Classical Ayurvedic treatises (Charaka Samhita, Sushuruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya) and modern scientific literature were reviewed to analyze the mineral composition, bio-enhancement mechanisms, and toxicological impacts of Saindhava Lavana. Results: Textual analysis shows its Deepana (appetizing), Pachana (digestive), and Sūkṣhma (cell-penetrating) properties enable it to penetrate micro-channels and mobilize deep-seated toxins. It acts as a bio-carrier in antitoxic formulations like Kshara Agada and Gandhahasti Agada and aids Panchakarma procedures.Modern evidence suggests its mineral-rich, additive-free profile may contribute to improved drug bioavailability. However, a distinct pharmacological paradox exists: While therapeutic doses neutralize poisons, excessive intake aggravates Pitta, Rakta (blood), and Visha (poison) itself, compounding toxicity.Discussion: The efficacy of Saindhava Lavana is strictly dose-dependent.Its Sūkṣhma and Vyavāyī properties can either safely expel or dangerously intensify toxins based on context. While its traditional use and mineral profile demonstrate high potential as an antitoxic adjuvant, systematic clinical validation is essential to establish safe therapeutic thresholds for modern integration.
