The purpose of this article is to explain the social functioning of discourse based on a scene from the film Puan in which the modes that make up the communicative event are analyzed so they can later be applied in a classroom setting. The activity is framed within the guidelines of Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday 1978, 1985), which, in turn, serves as the basis for adopting a multimodal approach (Kress and Van Leeuween 2001, 2006) in which it is posited that in the process of constructing meaning, certain semiotic resources are necessary to complement verbal language.
