What does “saying” mean in music? How many ways of saying and how many meanings can exist? How much does the performer contribute? Using the Sarabande from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite in C Major, BWV 1009, as a starting point, this work explores these questions through methodological approaches which integrate musical semantics, historical context, and interpretive subjectivity. It is based on the premise that understanding the musical text is fundamental to constructing meaning and fostering the communicability of the discourse. Within this framework, punctuation organizes the sonic unfolding, and articulation shapes its expressive quality, revealing both explicit and implicit dimensions of the interpretation.
