Purpose A novel control technique for the matrix converter (MC) under unbalanced grid voltage conditions is proposed in this paper. Compared to conventional direct AC–AC power conversion systems that require an intermediate DC link, matrix converters provide direct AC–AC conversion between sources with different phases and frequencies, and are compact and efficient. But maintaining balanced output voltage and current remains a significant challenge under grid voltage imbalance. This paper aims to propose a novel control technique for the matrix converter (MC) under unbalanced grid voltage (UGV) conditions. Design/methodology/approach To address this challenge, the proposed control algorithm uses a voltage imbalance compensation technique, a reference-frame transformation and space-vector modulation to achieve stable, balanced MC operation. Moreover, a new Matrix Converter Control-Deep Reinforcement framework is designed, comprising fundamental control features and processing steps for maximum adaptability and robustness under dynamic grid conditions. Findings The suggested method successfully maintains output voltage and current balance, even with a significant voltage imbalance in the grid, as demonstrated by extensive MATLAB simulations. Waveform regulation, output voltage control and speed response analysis are used to further validate the system’s performance. Originality/value The outcomes demonstrate the proposed approach’s potential to enhance the utility of matrix converters in contemporary power electronic systems and validate its efficacy.
