Some farm animal veterinarians practicing in the UK may feel they lack confidence to assess and manage the incidental sick pig. This article offers a practical toolkit to support veterinarians with such cases, including guidance on history-taking, handling, physical examination and clinical reasoning. Key elements of pig management – such as nutrition, biosecurity and housing – are outlined to support thorough case evaluation. A step-by-step overview of restraint methods is included, with an emphasis on low-stress techniques wherever possible. The importance of evidence-based treatment decisions are discussed, particularly in the context of antimicrobial stewardship. Three case studies demonstrate the application of clinical reasoning to real-life scenarios, focussing on diagnosis, treatment and prevention. By adopting a structured approach, veterinarians can improve pig welfare, increase confidence and engage more effectively with pig-owning clients.
