The 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections ended 15 years of AITC (All India Trinamool Congress) rule, and brought the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) to power. This study analyzes the political science implications of the structural, institutional, and socio-economic factors that contributed to the loss of the TMC’s (Trinamool Congress) continuous 15 year rule. Based on the theories of subaltern populism and electoral anti-incumbency, this research study analyzes public recruitment scandals and local level corruption, and the combination of the opposition parties, along with changes in the Election Commission’s guidelines, to transform the TMC’s electoral fortunes. It examines the outcomes of this transformation, up to July 2026. Further, this study analyzes the shift from subaltern welfare populism to ‘administrative exhaustion’ and the challenges to dominant party systems within the Indian state.
