This study analyzes composition and transformation of functions in Japanese commercial spaces since 2000, focusing on JCD Design Award–winning projects published in a professional journal specializing in commercial spaces. Annotations indicated on architectural drawings were extracted and classified to identify spatial typologies. Through identification of the characteristics of each type and examination of their functional configurations, the results indicate a decline in functionally specific spatial types and an increase in multi-functional spatial types with increased emphasis on experiential value. These findings clarify shifting societal demands relevant to future commercial space planning.
