The mechanisms of induced voltage waveform distortion at no-load and the harmonic components of armature current under load in the interior permanent magnet synchronous machine were investigated by modeling magneto motive force and permeance distributions. The no-load induced voltage and armature current on the load were analyzed as functions of time and space harmonics generated by the magneto motive force of the permanent magnet field and permeance pulsation of the stator slot. The results revealed that dominant harmonic components contained in these waveforms arise from relatively small modulated magnetic flux density components attributed to the permeance pulsation of the stator slot and the harmonics of the field magneto motive force of the same space harmonic orders as the stator slot permeance pulsation.
