Maximizing the power-to-weight ratio (PWR) is essential for traction motors in electric vehicles (EVs). This paper investigates a Halbach bonded-PM motor with fractional-slot concentrated windings to achieve higher performance than that of a commercial EV traction motor, examining various measures to improve the PWR and reduce losses, particularly AC copper loss. To maintain the output torque, a PM holder with partial non-magnetization improvement is also investigated. In addition, the mechanical strength against centrifugal force is evaluated. The proposed design successfully achieved approximately 1.7 times the PWR while maintaining approximately the same efficiency as the commercial traction motor.
