The Representation of Hegemonic Power in the Character of Walid in the Film Bidaah: A Critical Discourse Analysis Approach by Teun A. van Dijk The purpose of this study is to describe the representation of Walid’s hegemonic power in the film adapted from the novel Bidaah. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using Teun A. van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis approach. The results reveal Walid’s hegemonic power as represented through the dimensions of text structure, social cognition, and social context. The macro-textual structure reveals a central theme focused on the legitimization of religious power and the formation of a cult of personality around the character of Walid. The text’s superstructure is organized through a systematic narrative pattern, namely religious legitimacy conflicts, spiritual threats, and congregational obedience. The microtextual structure indicates that language is used as a tool of domination through syntactic, semantic, stylistic, and rhetorical aspects. In social cognition, Walid’s hegemonic power is constructed as that of a sacred figure and spiritual leader possessing religious legitimacy, while the congregation is positioned as a vulnerable community in need of spiritual guidance. In the social context, Walid’s hegemonic power emerges within a religious society that respects the authority of religious figures, maintains a patriarchal culture, and places faith in spiritual symbols and rituals making the congregation more receptive to accepting Walid’s dominance as a form of religious truth. These findings reveal that the practice of Walid’s hegemonic power is grounded in religious legitimacy, spiritual control, psychological manipulation, and the cultivation of congregational loyalty. Walid’s hegemony operates through social consent, such that the group accepts the authority of rules, punishments, and doctrines as unquestionable religious truths. This study contributes to raising public critical awareness in understanding discourse-based hegemonic power practices and serves as a reference for the development of critical literacy education.
