Artificial intelligence (AI) is impacting communication practices within academic institutions, including the English Department at Mohammed First University, where AI use is increasing. This empirical study examines how generative AI influences university students’ interpersonal competencies. It investigates whether AI helps students overcome linguistic barriers or generates challenges such as language standardization and over-reliance. Using a quantitative methodology, the research employs a structured questionnaire to assess AI’s impact on students’ communication accommodation behaviors. Findings reveal that students tend to adopt AI-generated linguistic patterns that are more formulaic and standardized than their natural writing style. Sustained dependence may weaken individuality and personal voice. The study highlights subtle changes in student expression within AI-mediated environments and underscores the pedagogical and ethical need to promote AI literacy, critical engagement with digital tools, and instructional frameworks that preserve communicative authenticity.
