Hepatic histopathology was used to compare Sphoeroides testudineus from the Barra do Una Sustainable Development Reserve, a reference area, and the Port of Santos channel. The histopathological index was higher in Santos (48.0 ± 6.9) than in Barra do Una (28.7 ± 8.5; p<0.001), with more melanomacrophage centers and leukocyte infiltration. The hepatosomatic index (p=0.479) and Le Cren condition factor (p=0.939) did not differ. Results indicate greater hepatic impairment in Santos but do not support attribution to a specific contaminant.
