In the 1860s, deep divisions emerged among the Serbian elite in the Habsburg monarchy regarding the optimal political approach for establishing Serbian Vojvodina and creating a more equitable position for Serbs within the monarchy. Đorđe Stratimirović and Svetozar Miletić, each in his own way, attempted to create an approach that would serve as a model for resolving the Serbian question. They both tried to position themselves as a leading voice in Serbian politics within the monarchy. This years-long struggle had serious repercussions for Serbian society within the monarchy. It took much longer to achieve a final resolution, and the dispute eventually led to the tragedy on Tucindan in 1890.
