Torenia fournieri was described from cultivated material originating in Cochinchina (southern Vietnam) and published with a detailed description and an accompanying colored illustration. Examination of the protologue indicates that no holotype was designated and that no preserved herbarium specimen was cited. A search for original material in major herbaria likely to contain material associated with Jean Linden and Eugène Fournier, including BR, P, K, G, L, and E, together with available digital repositories, did not locate an original specimen attributable to the protologue. The illustration published simultaneously with the protologue therefore represents the most appropriate element of original material for typification. In accordance with the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), the original illustration is here designated as the lectotype of Torenia fournieri Linden ex E. Fourn.
