This study examines how different Qur’anic recitations at Ali Khamenei’s state funeral corresponded with Iran’s relational positions toward selected recipients. The main issue is whether variation in sacred treatment within the same ritual setting carries relational meaning without being assumed as intentional state signaling. The study integrates Ritual Action, Symbolic Signaling, and Relational Positioning through a qualitative embedded case study and structured cross-case comparison of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Qatar, and Hamas, with Hezbollah retained as a contested evidentiary case. The findings show relatively strong correspondence for Hamas, partial correspondence for Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Qatar, and an indeterminate result for Hezbollah. The study concludes that sacred symbols can acquire diplomatic meaning when ritual variation is interpreted alongside recipients’ relational positions. However, the observed correspondence does not prove intentional verse selection or how recipients understood the recitations.
