Purpose of review The techniques and approaches for partial laryngeal cancer surgery, whether approached by endoscopic or open means have long been well established. However oncologic control often comes at the sacrifice of preservation of function. Recent findings We summarize the recent data for oncologic success and optimal functional outcomes following partial laryngeal surgery, including a growing role for transoral robotic surgery alongside endoscopic and open techniques. We discuss how oncologic and functional aims can co-exist by optimizing patient selection and drawing on institutional and surgeon experience. Summary Endoscopic, open, and robotic partial laryngeal surgery still have a place in the modern world and can lead to both oncologic and functional success.
