This conceptual article develops a toolkit for understanding and exploring value cohesion in Sino-British Joint Venture Universities (JVUs). Formal partnership arrangements can establish governance, quality assurance, and degree-awarding responsibilities, but they do not, in themselves, indicate whether participants involved in JVUs share the educational purposes that underpin institutional practice. Hence, this article formally specifies the concept of value cohesion as a provisional relationship among sufficiently shared educational purposes, recognition of relevant contributors, and opportunities to reconsider professional practice. To investigate how such cohesion emerges, weakens, or remains confined to particular groups, the article brings four theoretical perspectives into a connected conceptual framework: Hofstede’s dimensional model of national culture is used heuristically to surface different cultural expectations; Bourdieu’s sociology examines how particular interpretations acquire authority and recognition; Foucault’s work illuminates how anticipated evaluation can shape conduct and disclosure; and Herzfeld’s anthropology of cultural intimacy and social poetics examines how participants informally negotiate, accommodate, and rework institutional expectations. Rather than treating these perspectives as interchangeable, the framework shows how each addresses a distinct aspect of the same educational relationship and how their insights can qualify one another. A worked example involving independent critical thinking and pedagogical adaptation within a JVU illustrates the toolkit’s application, while four conditional propositions identify relationships for future empirical investigation. The article thus contributes a more explicit specification of value cohesion, a transferable conceptual toolkit for investigating educational relationships, and a foundation for future empirical research on JVU life.
