This integrative review highlights that while adopting a healthy diet, regular physical exercise, and ceasing tobacco and alcohol use are associated with improved blood pressure control, many local primary care lifestyle programs remain unimplemented proposals lacking post-intervention outcome evaluation.
INTRODUCTION: The arterial hypertension presents a range of manifestations—from asymptomatic to severe—leading to cardiovascular complications and associated with risk factors such as obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and a high-sodium diet, and it is considered one of the biggest public health problems in Brazil. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the scientific evidence regarding the influence of lifestyle changes on the control of systemic arterial hypertension. METHODOLOGY: This is an integrative literature review characterized as descriptive research. Data collection took place between August and October 2026, covering a six-year search period (2020–2026) and including materials in Portuguese and English. The databases consulted were Scientific Electronic Library Online, the Virtual Health Library (Brazil), and the National Library of Medicine. The study selection process adhered to established eligibility criteria. Selected studies were organized using data extraction sheets to facilitate the review process. Key information—including author, year of publication, study type, methodology employed, and outcome—was presented in a table and used to inform the discussion. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: This search yielded 32 articles; following an analysis of these articles and the eligibility criteria, eight were used for the results. CONCLUSION: Many of the studies presented describe intervention projects aimed at improving lifestyle—primarily through the adoption of healthier eating habits, regular physical activity, and the cessation of smoking and alcohol consumption. However, these projects have yet to be implemented.
