Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) is characterized by increased of the blood pressure levels and therefore it’s considered one of the major risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Thus, one of the main ways of preventing cardiovascular complications is related to the control of arterial hypertension, which can be accomplished through changes in lifestyle, as well as the use of antihypertensive drugs. Evaluate pharmacological aspects related to the treatment of hypertension, with emphasis on the elucidation of the main drugs indicated for its control. This is a cross-sectional hospital study, based on the analysis of medical records of hypertensive patients undergoing treatment at the Clinical Service of the Clinical Hospital of the Federal University of Goiás - Goiânia, GO, Brazil. The study population was constituted by 113 individuals, 33 men (29%) and 80 women (71%), and presented an age mean of 55.6 years. In addition, it was possible to observe that thiazide diuretics were the most prescribed for the treatment of hypertension (74%), and among them there was a higher prevalence of hydrochlorothiazide (47%). The therapeutic efficacy of thiazide diuretics, their well-tolerated adverse effects and their low cost, can be considered as the main factors that may justify their prescribing rate.
