In response to growing resource scarcity and supply chain vulnerabilities, regional food production within foodsheds is increasingly recognized as a strategy for enhancing food security and resilience. This study develops a practice-oriented conceptual framework for foodsheds and identifies empirically grounded delimitation criteria. Using a mixed-methods approach integrating a systematic literature review and semi-structured expert interviews, multiple technological, ecological, and socioeconomic factors shaping foodshed size, boundaries, and capacity were identified. The Leipzig foodshed is defined as a radius of less than 100 km (or 1-h drive) from the urban centre, dominated by arable land and marked by high transformation potential.
