ZMH - ANN-P 16552 (4 specimens), collected from Western Australia. Diagnosis. Body color in alcohol cream-coffee brown with brown pigmentation on dorsum. Prostomium trapezoidal with deep median furrow anteriorly. Eyes small with distinct lenses. Palps with robust, short palpophores and globular palpostyles. Antennae short and triangular. Longest tentacular cirri extending to chaetiger 3. Peristomium relatively long. Pharynx with conical paragnaths on both rings, smooth bars present on Areas VI, arranged as follows. Area I = 4–9; Area II = 12–39 in 2 curved rows; Area III = 21–35 sometimes with two or three cones displaced laterally, separate from main group; Area IV = 18–42; Area V = 3 in triangle (very rarely 1); Area VI = 1 bar; Areas VII – VIII = 32–46 in two rows. Area IV without bars. Paragnaths on oral ring tend to be larger than those on maxillary ring. Neurochaetae with homogomph spinigers and 1–3 robust heterogomph falcigers in supra-acicular fascicle; heterogomph falcigers and spinigers in subacicular fascicle (Hutchings et al. 1991). Distribution and habitat. The species was found in Indo-West Pacific, inhabiting intertidal rocky shores. Remarks. The specimens in the present study agree well with previous descriptions of Hutchings et al. (1991). Morphology of the reproductive stage of this species is similar to that of Perinereis helleri. Characteristic features include a single short bar-shaped paragnath on each Area VI. While P. nigropunctata is one of the most abundant wawo worms, this species was not found among nyale worms. The non-reproductive stage specimens obtained in the present work complement the collection of this species at MZB.
