Purpose This research aims to provide a thorough literature review of education quality and risk management, both empirical and theoretical, illustrating how the quality of education and risk management has generated promising avenues for future analysis. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the PRISMA review protocol and a meta-literature review were used to analyse relevant literature from the Scopus database, covering the period from 1990 to 2024. Findings This article evaluates the developments and gaps in applying quality standards in higher education. It highlights the shift in global research focus in this field from the United States and Europe to Asia, which has the potential to improve risk management related to educational quality. The findings indicate that the rapid growth of the higher education sector, coupled with concerns about declining educational quality, especially in developing nations, may lead to increased challenges for institutional survival, ultimately affecting the overall performance of higher education institutions. Research limitations/implications The findings show that the quality of education is a relevant and emerging topic. It highlights the need for future research on the skills and activities of business and management professionals, as well as how their customers perceive quality in an ever-changing environment. Originality/value The significance of this study lies in its aim to fill a gap in the existing literature by analysing and reviewing relevant research on education quality and risk management using PRISMA and meta-literature reviews. This analysis is beneficial for researchers as it offers a clear understanding of the development and trends in the field. Furthermore, this evaluation highlights potential directions for future research and serves as a valuable reference for further investigation.
