Management of Autism Spectrum Disorder (Vatakaphaja Unmada) Through Ayurvedic Intervention: A Case Report

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impaired social interaction, communication deficits, and restricted repetitive behaviors. Despite advances in behavioral therapy, no definitive curative treatment exists. In Ayurveda, symptomatology resembling ASD can be correlated with Vatakaphaja Unmada, involving derangement of Manovaha Srotas, Mana, and Buddhi. Objective: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of Ayurvedic management in a child diagnosed with moderate autism spectrum disorder. Case Presentation: An 8-year-old male child diagnosed with moderate ASD (Indian Scale for Assessment of Autism ISAA score: 109) underwent integrative Ayurvedic treatment comprising internal medications and Panchakarma therapies for 30 days. Intervention: Internal medications included Jatamansighana Vati, Krumikuthara Rasa, Saraswata Churna (for Jihva Gharshana), and Lavanabhaskara Churna. Panchakarma procedures included Snehana, Udwartana, Swedana, Nasya, Shirodhara, Shirolepa, and Yoga Basti. Outcome Measures: Assessment was performed using the ISAA scale before and after intervention. Results: Post-treatment ISAA score reduced from 109 (moderate autism) to 88 (mild autism). Significant improvements were observed in eye contact, communication initiation, sleep quality, bowel habits, reduction of hyperactivity, repetitive movements, and chewing ability. Conclusion: Integrative Ayurvedic management demonstrated clinically meaningful improvement in ASD symptoms in this case. Larger controlled trials are warranted to establish evidence-based protocols.
