Self-Esteem and Its Relationship with Some Health Behaviors Among High School Students in Palestine

Background: Self-esteem is a fundamental component of adolescents' psychological well-being and is closely linked to their academic success and social adjustment, as well as their overall mental health. Studying self-esteem is particularly significant within Palestinian society due to the prevailing social and economic pressures that may impact adolescent development, acting either as additional stressors or supportive factors in the formation of self-concept. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between various dimensions of self-esteem—general self-esteem, home/parental self-esteem, social self-esteem, and work-related self-esteem—and family income, as well as health behaviors (smoking, energy drink consumption, and physical exercise) among high school students in Palestine. Methodology: The study employed an analytical descriptive approach. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory was administered to a random sample of 550 male and female students from secondary schools in Nablus Governorate. The analysis focused on examining the relationship between self-esteem and four main variables: family income, energy drink consumption, smoking, and physical exercise. Findings and Conclusions: The results revealed that the overall level of self-esteem among students was moderate, with a mean score of 52.26. The highest mean was recorded for general self-esteem (22.81), while the lowest was for the work-related dimension (5.72). Statistical analysis indicated a significant positive correlation between family income and social self-esteem (r = 0.109, p = 0.011). A negative correlation was found between family income and work-related self-esteem (r = -0.091, p = 0.033). Additionally, a negative correlation emerged between smoking and work-related self-esteem (r = -0.093, p = 0.030). The findings also revealed a strong inverse relationship between energy drink consumption and home/parental self-esteem (r = -0.542, p < 0.001). Conversely, a significant positive correlation was observed between physical exercise and work-related self-esteem (r = 0.117, p = 0.006). Recommendations: Based on the findings and given the positive association between physical exercise and the work-related aspect of self-esteem, the study recommends integrating structured physical activities into school programs. الخلفية النظرية: يُعد تقدير الذات عنصرًا أساسيًا في الصحة النفسية للمراهقين، ويرتبط ارتباطًا وثيقًا بنجاحهم الدراسي وتكيفهم الاجتماعي، حيث يرتبط ارتباطًا وثيقًا بنجاحهم الدراسي وصحتهم النفسية. تزداد أهمية دراسة تقدير الذات في المجتمع الفلسطيني نظرًا للضغوط الاجتماعية والاقتصادية التي قد تؤثر في نمو المراهقين، والتي قد تشكل ضغوطًا إضافية أو عوامل داعمة لتطور الذات. الهدف: هدفت الدراسة إلى فحص العلاقة بين تقدير الذات بأبعاده (الذات العامة، تقدير ذات المنزل والوالدين، وتقدير الذات الاجتماعية، وتقدير ذات العمل) ودخل الأسرة والسلوكيات الصحية (التدخين، مشروبات الطاقة، ممارسة الرياضة) لدى طلبة المرحلة الثانوية في فلسطين. المنهجية: استخدمت الدراسة المنهج الوصفي التحليلي، حيث تم تطبيق مقياس كوبر سميث لتقدير الذات على عينة عشوائية مكونة من 550 طالباً وطالبة من المدارس الثانوية في محافظة نابلس، وتم فحص العلاقة بين تقدير الذات وأربعة متغيرات رئيسية): دخل الأسرة، استهلاك مشروبات الطاقة، التدخين، وممارسة الرياضة. الاستنتاجات والنتائج: كشفت النتائج أن مستوى تقدير الذات لدى الطلبة كان متوسطاً بشكل عام بمتوسط (52.26)، مع تسجيل أعلى متوسط للذات العامة (22.81)، وأدنى متوسط لبعد العمل (5.72)، وأظهر التحليل الإحصائي وجود علاقة ارتباط موجبة بين دخل الأسرة والذات الاجتماعية لدى طلاب المرحلة الثانوية في فلسطين، حيث بلغ معامل الارتباط (r = 0.109)، وبمستوى دلالة(p = 0.011) ، وُجدت علاقة ارتباط سالبة بين دخل الأسرة والعمل لنفس الفئة، بلغ معامل الارتباط (r = -0.091)، وبمستوى دلالة (p = 0.033) وأظهرت النتائج علاقة ارتباط سالبة بين التدخين وذات العمل حيث بلغ معامل الارتباط (r = -0.093)، وبمستوى دلالة (p = 0.030)، بينت النتائج وجود علاقة عكسية بين مشروبات الطاقة وذات المنزل والوالدين، حيث بلغ معامل الارتباط (r = -0.542)، وبمستوى دلالة (p < 0.001)، كما أظهرت النتائج وجود علاقة ارتباط موجبة بين ممارسة الرياضة وذات العمل حيث بلغ معامل الارتباط (r = 0.117) p p = 0.006). التوصيات: بناء على النتائج التي تم التوصل اليها وبما أن النتائج أظهرت علاقة موجبة بين ممارسة الرياضة وبُعد العمل في تقدير الذات، توصي الدراسة بإدراج أنشطة رياضية منظمة ضمن البرامج المدرسية.
