Stroke survivors have an elevated risk of cognitive decline and dementia. It is unclear how pre-stroke atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk influences post-stroke cognitive decline and dementia. We examined the association between pre-stroke American Heart Association Predicting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease EVENTs (PREVENT) 10-year ASCVD risk score (which includes age and sex) and post-stroke cognitive decline and dementia, independent of pre-stroke cognition.
