Key Points

  • The evaluation aims to assess the cost-effectiveness of agricultural research stations in Nigeria using panel data.
  • Utilized a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Analyzed panel data from multiple years to evaluate costs and benefits.
  • Applied statistical inference with uncertainty-aware criteria.
  • Cost per unit of output significantly varied among research stations.
  • Some stations achieved over 20% return on investment within two years.
  • Certain stations demonstrated high efficiency in converting research into practical solutions.

Abstract

Field research stations play a crucial role in agricultural development in Nigeria, serving as centers for innovation and knowledge transfer. A mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative methods was employed. Panel data from multiple years were analysed to assess costs and benefits across stations. The analysis revealed that the cost per unit of output varied significantly among different stations, with some achieving a return on investment exceeding 20% within two years. Despite challenges, certain stations demonstrated remarkable efficiency in translating research into practical agricultural solutions. Investment should be prioritised in stations that showed high cost-effectiveness ratios, while ongoing evaluations are needed to refine strategies and technologies. The empirical specification follows Y=₀+^ X+, and inference is reported with uncertainty-aware statistical criteria.
