Investigations related to restoration work produced evidence for the structural history and an important 13th-14th century pottery assemblage for SE Wales. Documentary history is recounted, earthworks of castle and village described, and the structural history analysed: tower of mid 12th/early 13th century, perhaps with ringwork; hall of early 13th-later 15th (two storeys), curtain wall replacing the presumed ringwork, gatehouse, drawbridge; and in Phase III (starting in late 15th) more comforts were installed, with a chimney stack, and improvements to the upper hall and groundfloor hall. Further buildings were added in 17th century.
Stuart Wrathmell (Thu,) studied this question.
