ABS TRACT Objective: Wound healing dynamics following endoscopic surgery play a crucial role in minimizing postoperative scarring, maintaining the patency of the drainage pathways, and promoting the regeneration of the functional epithelium.This study aimed to investigate the effects of inserting a topical antibiotic-impregnated gelatin sponge into the nasal cavity on the wound healing process.Material and Methods: Thirty-two rats underwent controlled injury to the left nasal mucosa using a standardized brushing technique.The subjects were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n=8 per group).Group 1 served as the control and received no additional intervention.In Groups 2, 3, and 4, gelatin sponges, either plain (Group 2), impregnated with nitrofurazone (Group 3), or with bacitracin-neomycin (Group 4) were applied to the injured mucosa within the nostrils.All animals were sacrificed on Day 21, and histopathological evaluation was performed to assess wound healing parameters.Results: Significant differences were found across all groups (p<0.05).Compared with the control group, the bacitracinneomycin group showed improvements in all parameters (p<0.05).The nitrofurazone group demonstrated reduced inflammatory cell infiltration, epithelial thickness index, subepithelial thickness index, and subepithelial fibrosis, with increased goblet cell count and neovascularization (p<0.05).The gelatin sponge group differed only in the subepithelial thickness index (p<0.05).Compared with the gelatin sponge group, the nitrofurazone group showed better outcomes in inflammation, epithelial thickness index, and neovascularization (p<0.05).Conclusion: The application of nitrofurazoneor bacitracin-neomycin-impregnated gelatin sponges may contribute to improved tissue regeneration, reduced fibrosis, and limited hypertrophic changes during the late phases of wound healing.
