The annual What’s Hot in Literacy survey documents shifts in literacy education by identifying topics emphasized in research and practice, as well as those warranting greater attention. Since 1997, a panel of 25 literacy leaders has participated in structured interviews to rate the attention being directed toward key literacy topics. The 2025 survey identified the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy as the only “extremely hot” topic, yet it was also the only item deemed “should not be hot,” highlighting ongoing tensions in the field. Three topics were considered “very hot”: Artificial Intelligence in Literacy, Early Literacy, and Phonics/Phonemic Awareness. Despite receiving less attention, Adolescent Literacy and Cultural and Linguistic Diversity and Literacy for Multilingual Learners were unanimously rated as “should be hot.” Findings document the evolving landscape of literacy education and offer direction for future policy, research, and professional learning.
