Self-Esteem and Its Relationship to Introversion in Sample of Adolescents Who Survived Sexual Abuse

Background: Adolescents who have survived sexual abuse face psychological and social challenges, most notably low self-esteem, introversion, and cognitive closure, which may increase their vulnerability to social anxiety. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-esteem and introversion among adolescent survivors of sexual abuse, with a focus on gender-based differences. Methodology: The sample consisted of 160 adolescents (85 females and 75 males), aged between 14 and 18 years. The study employed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, developed by Morris Rosenberg (1965) and translated by Ahmed Abu Asaad (2011), and the Introversion Scale developed by Marwa Zalabia (2020). Statistical analyses were conducted to assess gender differences and correlations between variables. Results: The findings revealed statistically significant differences (p < 0.01) between males and females in self-esteem and introversion, including its subdimensions. Females demonstrated higher levels of self-esteem but also exhibited higher levels of introversion. Furthermore, no significant correlation was found between self-esteem and introversion among males. However, among females, a statistically significant negative correlation was observed between self-esteem and both the total introversion score and the withdrawal from competition subdimension. Conclusion: These results underscore the need to consider gender differences in designing psychological support programs for adolescent survivors of sexual abuse. Special attention should be given to enhancing self-esteem and addressing introverted tendencies, particularly among females. الخلفية: يواجه المراهقون الناجون من الاعتداء الجنسي تحديات نفسية واجتماعية عميقة، أبرزها انخفاض تقدير الذات، والانطواء، والانغلاق المعرفي، مما يزيد من احتمالية إصابتهم بالرهاب الاجتماعي. الهدف: هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى الكشف عن العلاقة بين تقدير الذات والانطواء لدى عينة من المراهقين الناجين من الاعتداء الجنسي، مع التركيز على الفروق بين الذكور والإناث. المنهجية: تكونت العينة من 160 مراهقًا (85 إناث و75 ذكورًا) تتراوح أعمارهم بين 14 و18 عامًا. تم استخدام مقياس روزنبرغ لتقدير الذات (إعداد موريس روزنبرغ، 1965، ترجمة أحمد أبو أسعد، 2011)، ومقياس الانطواء (إعداد مروى زلابية، 2020). تم تحليل البيانات باستخدام الأساليب الإحصائية المناسبة لاختبار الفروق والعلاقات الارتباطية. النتائج: أظهرت النتائج فروقًا ذات دلالة إحصائية عند مستوى (0.01) بين الذكور والإناث من المراهقين الناجين من الاعتداء الجنسي، حيث كانت الفروق لصالح الإناث في كل من تقدير الذات والانطواء وأبعاده. وقد تبين أن الإناث يتمتعن بمستوى أعلى من تقدير الذات، لكنهن يعانين أيضًا من مستويات أعلى من الانطواء. كما لم تظهر علاقة دالة إحصائيًا بين تقدير الذات والانطواء لدى الذكور، بينما وُجدت علاقة ارتباطية سالبة دالة إحصائيًا لدى الإناث بين تقدير الذات وكل من الدرجة الكلية للانطواء والانسحاب من المنافسة. الاستنتاج: تشير النتائج إلى أهمية مراعاة الفروق بين الجنسين في تصميم وتنفيذ برامج الدعم النفسي للمراهقين الناجين من الاعتداء الجنسي، لا سيما فيما يتعلق ببناء تقدير الذات وتقليل مظاهر الانطواء لدى الإناث.
