Developing Research Competence in Prospective Teachers of Ukrainian Language and Literature Through Course "Ukrainian Ethnolinguistics"

Introduction. Ethnolinguistics, exploring how language reflects the mentality, worldview, ethics, and culture of its speakers, plays a crucial role in ethnic and national self-identification. The need to integrate ethnolinguistic studies into the training of prospective Ukrainian language teachers has become relevant.Purpose. This study aims to justify the significance of the course «Ukrainian Ethnolinguistics» in cultivating research competence among prospective teachers. Through analytical thinking, creativity, and a nuanced understanding of linguistic issues, this course expands students’ horizons. Methods. The methodology, implemented at Kyiv National Linguistic University, integrates ethnolinguistics into bachelor’s and master’s level courses. The study employed qualitative methods, including case studies and participant observation, as well as surveys and interviews with students and faculty members. Results. The analysis of various approaches to research competence highlighted the need for its development through engaging and meaningful tasks aligned with students’ interests. It was demonstrated that ethnolinguistic tasks, using both folkloric and non-folkloric materials such as media and video resources, can effectively enhance students’ understanding. These tasks improve prospective teachers’ skills in analyzing communicative environments, applying non-standard tasks in their professional activities, integrating diverse knowledge fields, and encouraging students to analyze live speech and its social impacts critically. Conclusion. Integrating Ukrainian ethnolinguistics into education programs for prospective teachers fosters an appreciation for the role of language and cultural symbols in shaping national consciousness. Small research tasks empower future educators, refining their observation, analytical skills, and understanding of linguistic nuances, equipping them to address contemporary challenges.
