Consensus meeting recommends effective prehabilitation components for patients with FAI syndrome before hip arthroscopy, suggesting targeted exercise interventions.
OBJECTIVE: To review the evidence on prehabilitation, and then reach consensus on the most effective components, ideal duration and method of delivering prehabilitation for patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for FAI syndrome. METHODS: The consensus meeting involved 17 international multidisciplinary experts from various disciplines, including physiotherapy, orthopaedic surgery and nursing. An informal ‘expert consensus meeting’ methodology was employed. The meeting was held at the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy’s annual scientific meeting. Prior to the consensus meeting, current evidence on prehabilitation for patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for FAI syndrome was collated and analysed, and then presented to the consensus participants. RESULTS: Eight recommendations were derived from the consensus meeting. The prehabilitation regimen for FAI syndrome should include exercises that target deficiencies in muscle strength, hip range of motion (ROM), hip joint proprioception, cardiovascular (CV) fitness and implement measures to manage patient expectations and alleviate anxiety prior to surgery. CONCLUSION: The consensus development meeting derived key recommendations to guide novel prehabilitation programs for patients with FAI syndrome who are preparing for hip arthroscopy.
