Descriptive-correlational research showed significant ties between study habits and reading proficiency in Grade Five pupils, indicating areas for improvement.
This study investigated the reading proficiency of Grade Five pupils at Mindanao State University-Integrated Laboratory School, specifically in terms of their study skills. The researcher employed the standardized instrument Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes developed by William F. Brown and Wayne, to assess the pupils' study habits and attitudes and examine their relationship to reading proficiency. A descriptive-correlational research design was utilized to analyze the variables, with Grade Five pupils serving as the respondents. To gather the necessary data, two instruments were used: a standardized questionnaire assessing reading proficiency in terms of study skills, and the aforementioned survey on study habits and attitudes. The findings revealed that a majority of the pupils struggled to accurately interpret information presented in charts, could not effectively use a dictionary, and were unfamiliar with the different sections of a newspaper. Furthermore, the results showed a significant relationship between reading proficiency and pupils' study habits and attitudes. Based on these findings, appropriate recommendations were proposed to help improve the study skills and reading comprehension of the learners.
