Observational analysis highlights successful CFRP repair in distressed PCCP, suggesting it offers a strong alternative for pipeline restoration.
This paper presents a summary of experience with the use of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) lining in the recent past years for repair of individual distressed Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP) segments, as well as a few projects on internal lining of bar-wrapped pipes and steel pipelines. The popularity of CFRP repair is primarily due to the high strength of the material, ease of installation, and absence of open pit construction. This paper discusses the CFRP repair philosophy and addresses questions, such as is CFRP lining repair permanent or temporary repair? What should the design criteria be for permanent repair? What should the design criteria be in the longitudinal direction? The paper also discusses the criteria for CFRP repair of corroding pipes other than PCCP, such as bar-wrapped pipe, steel pipe, and sections of pipeline involving multiple pipes and joints.
