Analysis reveals flood-prone regions in Rio do Sul, suggesting nature-based solutions to enhance urban resilience and sustainability.
Given Rio do Sul’s geographic location in the Alto Vale do Itajaí, the city is highly susceptible to flooding. The natural configuration of the basin causes rainfall to accumulate in higher areas and flow towards lower regions, increasing flood risks. Additionally, the city’s valley setting and the confluence of multiple rivers, along with sub-basins obstructed by larger tributaries, slow down water drainage. This leads to recurrent flooding, affecting low-lying neighborhoods such as Jardim Luis Bianchetti in the Taboão district. This study presents Phase 1 of a broader project aimed at resilient cities and disaster mitigation, focusing on the implementation of a floodable park as a retention basin. The methodology involves a mixed approach, combining geographic and historical data analysis, interviews, and environmental assessments. The study highlights the urgent need for mitigation strategies, given the severe economic, social, and environmental impacts of recurrent floods. Although existing literature discusses Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and floodable parks, most studies in Alto Vale do Itajaí focus on diagnosing flood events rather than applying NBS to rehabilitate vulnerable areas. This article, reporting on Phase 1, analyzes flood-prone areas and proposes sustainable interventions. Future research (Phase 2) will develop the architectural project using BIM modeling to refine and simulate proposed solutions. While this study does not yet include architectural design, it provides essential urban planning guidelines to enhance flood management and improve urban resilience, contributing to sustainability and quality of life in Rio do Sul.
