Purpose The research aims to explore the effect of barriers to AI adoption in teaching under the moderator effect of personal innovativeness (PI). Design/methodology/approach The study surveyed 379 lecturers teaching subjects in economics, business, finance and banking at universities in Ho Chi Minh City. SEM is used because the research includes a moderator variable. Using the SmartPLS 4.0 software, the data are analyzed in two stages including model evaluation and structural model evaluation. Findings The findings demonstrate that personal innovativeness encourages lecturers to adopt AI in teaching, while external and internal barriers prevent their adoption. Furthermore, the relationship between internal barriers and the willingness to adopt AI in teaching is moderated by personal innovativeness. Originality/value This is one of the few studies focused on understanding the moderating role of PI in the relationship between barriers and AI adoption. An interesting finding of the study is that, among Vietnamese economics lecturers, personal innovativeness plays an important role in assisting in the removal of internal barriers that prevents AI adoption.
