Key Points

  • The analysis shows a predominance of multi-word and two-word terminological units in the texts.
  • Findings include the identification of thematic groups of terminology used by both P. S. Pallas and I. P. Falk.
  • Semantic and formal analyses highlight similarities and differences in terminological use among the authors.
  • The study reflects the early development of metallurgical terminology during the 18th century.

Abstract

The article presents a comparative analysis of terminological units found in the travel notes of scientists and travelers P. S. Pallas and I. P. Falk, focusing on their descriptions of 18th-century Ural metallurgical plants. The study involves extracting contexts related to the Ural metallurgical plants from their texts, identifying terminological units specific to 18th-century metallurgical production, and conducting both semantic and formal analyses. Through semantic analysis, thematic groups of terminological units were identified, highlighting those most frequently used by both authors as well as groups with fewer units. The formal analysis categorized terminological units into single-word, two-word, and multi-word types. The findings indicate a predominance of multi-word and two-word terminological units in the texts. The study concludes by noting both similarities and differences in the use of terminological units by scientists and travelers, reflecting the early stage of development of metallurgical terminology in the 18th century.
