Analysis shows a strong link between internationalization, intellectual capital, and innovation in hotel chains, suggesting effective strategies for competitiveness.
Purpose This study examines the relationship between internationalization and innovation as key strategies to enhance hotels’ competitiveness. It emphasizes the critical role of intellectual capital (IC) and dynamic capabilities (DCs) in fostering innovation within the context of the international hotel industry. Design/methodology/approach The study analyzes a sample of 107 international Spanish hotel chains. A quantitative approach is used to investigate how the accumulation of IC and the development of DCs influence innovation outcomes in companies operating in a dynamic international environment. Findings The results reveal that hotel chains with higher levels of internationalization tend to significantly enhance their IC base and develop stronger DCs, facilitating innovation. The knowledge accumulated through international activities, coupled with the agility and skill fostered by DCs, is decisive in improving these companies’ innovative capacity. Additionally, IC and DCs play an indirect yet critical role in reinforcing the internationalization-innovation relationship. Originality/value In recent years, innovation has received much attention in the academic literature due to the need for companies to adapt to the present turbulent and changing environment. In this dynamic context, the hotel industry has been particularly affected. In terms of companies operating at the international level, few studies have analyzed the factors that lead to innovation. The findings provide valuable insights for hotel managers aiming to enhance competitiveness through innovation. Companies can achieve sustained innovative performance by strategically leveraging internationalization to build IC and DCs.
