Case report shows ADVOS accelerates apixaban removal in a patient undergoing emergency surgery, indicating its potential for reducing bleeding risks.
Background: In patients on direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC), emergency surgery is characterized by an increased risk for bleeding. Case Description: A 72-year-old male patient with cardiogenic shock required emergency surgery due to severe aortic regurgitation resulting from acute prosthetic valve endocarditis. Due to atrial fibrillation, the patient was taking apixaban until surgery. Postoperatively, the ADVanced Organ Support (ADVOS) albumin hemodialysis system was used. Serial measurements revealed strongly accelerated apixaban removal, while drainage losses were only moderate. Conclusion: ADVOS accelerates the removal of apixaban and is a promising therapy for preventing bleeding complications in patients receiving DOAC after emergency surgery.
