This article identifies five types of tiled fireplaces in modern Russian design, highlighting how they manifest the Russian style and national traditions.
The article for the first time examines tiled fireplaces in a modern interior and their decorative elements from the perspective of identifying and defining the signs of the Russian artistic style. The purpose of the study is to identify the main types of tiled fireplaces in modern Russian design practice, in which the Russian style is manifested in one way or another, and to characterize their systemic features. The article makes a correlation between tiled fireplaces in modern domestic residential and public interiors and their historical counterparts that have existed since the 10th century in the form of stove and architectural tiles. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time a classification of tiled fireplaces has been developed, which traces the preservation of Russian national traditions. As a result, five main types of tiled fireplaces in the Russian style were noted: relief monochrome terracotta and glazed ones with floral and zoomorphic motifs; relief multicolored painted ones (“Russian uzorochie”, Russian patternwork); Petrovsky-style fireplaces with smooth story tiles made using the technique of underglaze painting on raw white enamel; Russian Modern style tiled fireplaces; tiled fireplaces based on Russian fairy tales and Slavic mythology, narrative and ornamental.
