Review explores thermal energy storage improvements using composite PCM, highlighting its efficiency and sustainability.
The present review paper deals with the different types of phase change materials and challenges associated with their thermal properties over the performance of thermal energy storage during phase transition. The development of conventional PCM with the help of different fabrication techniques, additives, surface properties, nanoparticles, micro/macro enhanced materials, and the developed materials is called composite PCM. Later, the significance of composite PCM and applications, which help in thermal conductivity enhancement, stability, leakage prevention, and improved thermal efficiency of storage systems, was discussed in detail. Finally, the role of hybrid composite PCMs in enhancing cooling, lowering thermal conductivity issues, and developing new hybrid composite PCMs has been reviewed and discussed. It was observed that from the threadbare discussion of composite PCM, there is still room to work on PCM related to structural integrity, longevity, sustainability, and economic issues.
