Newly identified Gopkittisak gallardoi highlights taxonomy variations and sexual dimorphism in crabs.
The sediment-dwelling gaeticine crab Gopkittisak gallardoi (Serène & Soh, 1976) (Varunidae) is recorded from India for the first time. The male specimen is figured and aspects of its taxonomy are discussed, notably variation in the pattern of transverse cristae on the dorsal surface of the carapace. Sexual dimorphism is also recorded for the proportions of the ambulatory legs. A key to the species in the genus is also provided.
