This observational analysis uncovers soil characteristics and catena formation in Brazil, suggesting climatic changes affected land use planning.
We characterize the Pico do Jabre (PB, Brazil) toposequence and soil–landscape catena. On gently undulating terrain (~900–950 m), Ferralsol patches at the summit grade laterally into Acrisol/Cambisol on the midslope; Leptosol/Regosol occupy summit/shoulder and footslope and lack B horizons. Nodules occur in all B horizons; concretions only in the ferralic B; charcoal is absent. The relative dominance of goethite over hematite and downslope percolation indicate climatic alternation and past hydromorphism, with Fe migration governed by redox cycles. WRB classification provides an internationally comparable basis for paleoclimate reconstruction and land-use planning.
