Analysis shows genotype and environment influence yield in groundnuts, suggesting optimal varieties for regions.
Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a leguminous oil seed crop cultivated in the semi-arid and subtropical regions of the world. Hence, the objective of this paper is to assess the growth and yield performance of various improved groundnut varieties in selected regions of Nasarawa State, Nigeria using appropriate standard methods The performance of the groundnut is influenced by genotype × environment interactions (GEI), with environmental factors such as rainfall, temperature, and soil properties playing critical roles in the in their growth and yield. This study investigated the GEI effects on groundnut growth and yield-related traits across two locations (Lafia and Akwanga) with varied soil properties and climatic conditions. Results indicated that groundnut growth traits considered in this study were influenced by genotype and location showing significant varietal differences. Significant differences in yield traits like the weight of dry pods per stand (WDPS) were also observed, with Akwanga recording a total yield of 710kg/ha while Lafia recorded 545kg/ha. Correlation analysis revealed positive relationships between traits such as germination rate, number of branches, and pod weight.
