Despite the numerous territorial disputes roiling East Asia, the region continues to avoid major war in the post-Cold War era. This finding goes against one of the fundamental predictions of neorealism: that security dilemmas and arms races are inevitable. Unfortunately, regional peace is increasingly difficult to maintain.
