Case study examines digital documentation techniques, revealing insights for cultural heritage conservation.
The determination of approaches to conservation on historical sites is based on the principles that have been accepted on an international level. While these principles define the tangible and intangible values of the cultural heritage to be protected as a whole, they have also brought conservation actions to a holistic, participatory and continuous dimension. The initial and most delicate phase of the conservation process, which commences with registration and identification, is the documentation stage. Over time, techniques related to documentation have evolved, with traditional measurement methods being superseded by digital methods. These methods, which provide rapid, precise data in original coordinates, constitute a crucial foundation for research conducted in protected areas. Ortahisar, currently the central district of Trabzon, is one of the oldest settlements in the city. The area was designated as two protected zones, designated I and II, in 1985, and a conservation plan was prepared in 1986. In this study, the documentation work carried out in the Trabzon Ortahisar Protected Area in 2012 is examined, and the techniques, equipment and work processes used, and the final products obtained, are shared.
